#OpenLetter – #MYSpeedmasterStory – Omega Malaysia x Team Matick

Introduction

One of the reasons why we started The Matick Blog 5 years ago (we just turned 5 last week!) was to uncover the untold stories of watch collectors in the most non-pretentious manner possible. We have always felt that there is a certain sense of romanticism associated with the bond a watch owner has with his/her watch. That bond is truly one of a kind. And for us, we live for those stories.

Recently we partnered up with Omega Malaysia to uncover those stories – YOUR stories.

The significance of the Omega Speedmaster, and many of the stories that go along with it, have been uncovered and shared with the public, especially over the past several years. Having survived everything; from being an untested piece in early spaceflight, to gruelling tests by NASA, and every manned lunar mission in history, it’s easy to see the appeal of the Speedmaster. And this appeal extends beyond just enthusiasts of watches and space exploration, as it touches the hearts and minds of anyone with a passing interest in history and the tales of intrepid explorers.

But while these stories are well known, what we wish to share via this campaign are your personal stories with the Speedmaster. As Speedmaster enthusiasts are wont to say: there are many Speedmasters out there, but only this one is mine. And that personal bond is exactly what we want to learn about and share.

By answering a brief questionnaire and submitting a photo or two, we hope to be able to dig further into the personal bond between Malaysians and their Speedmasters, and to share them with other collectors. And in return, Omega has generously agreed to provide a few special gifts and exclusive invitations to a future Speedmaster event (mind you, we’re not talking about just any random watch event, you’re in for a treat if you participate) as a sign of appreciation for the local Speedmaster community.

To kick things off, we have reached out to Speedmaster owners that we know personally, but if you’re a fellow Malaysian Speedmaster owner and you’d like to join us on this journey and be a part of a very special community, please reach out to us via email or IG, and we’ll set you up and we promise you, you’re in for a real treat!

For Team Matick,

Marshall, KC, Vincent.

Week 1 #MySpeedmasterStory Recap – 5th July 2020

Throughout the course of the week, we’ve been honoured to share stories from three Malaysian Speedmaster owners: Jimmy Ang, Azfar, and Wen Harn.

We kicked things off with Jimmy, who recounted his initial experience with his vintage Speedy ref. 3592. Treating it with kid gloves, it took him a while to remember that he was wearing a watch qualified for space exploration!

Next up was Azfar, sharing the story of how he purchased his modern Speedmaster on a rather special date: 18.8.18. He also doffs his hat to an Omega boutique manager who helped him with his purchase.

Finally, we heard from Wen Harn as he explained the personal significance of his Speedmaster. Being the spark that lit his horological passion, it holds enough sentimental value for it to be an absolute keeper.

And that’s a wrap for week one of #MySpeedmasterStory! Thanks to everyone who’s sent their submissions in; we’ll continue putting these up for the coming month, so keep your eyes peeled. Let us know in the comments if you’d like to see the full stories from these gentlemen, and if you haven’t already joined us, there’s no time like the present.

For Team Matick,

KC

#OpenLetter – #TimeWellSpent – Nodus Watches x The Matick Blog – Edition 3

You know what they say, it’s not about the destination, it’s more about the journey that matters.

I guess this is it.

It has been a long road for us, and I dare say this is our biggest highlight to date because it stood for everything we’ve been working so hard for.

When we started this little blog back in 2015, it was all about the watches. But as the years go by, I began to realise that the watches are secondary, and it has always been about the people and the community.

And for a long time, I wasn’t chasing the money or the watches, I was chasing the dream of building and cultivating a community of like-minded individuals. Every interaction and every friendship forged during our events are what I am after. This is my approach and philosophy to watch collecting.

And this collaboration with Nodus Watches is exactly the product of that philosophy.

On March 7th, Wes from Nodus will be joining for our 3rd edition of the Time Well Spent GTG series which we regularly host with Front Room & Kneady Baker, to celebrate the launch of our very special limited edition Nodus AvaMatick.

#OpenLetter – KC and Vincent Joins Team Matick!

It’s been a really interesting and challenging year so far for The Matick Blog. The past few months have been somewhat quite difficult to say the least, simply because of the fact that some of us are currently experiencing a transition period in our lives and our respective careers. New jobs at new places, new responsibilities come with new priorities, and to be completely honest, a couple months ago, we realised that we were all struggling to even make time for the Blog.

So last week, right after Edition 2 of our #TimeWellSpent GTG, I sat down with the team and had a long chat over coffee about the future, and we collectively decided that it is time to shake things up a little bit. And today, as the founder of this team in pursuit of this passion project, I couldn’t be happier to welcome two fresh new faces to the team.

KC is a doctor who’s currently based in northern Malaysia, Kedah. I’ve known KC for some time now (surely many of you do too) and I’ve always been intrigued with his approach to watch collecting. KC is very opinionated and a focused enthusiast/collector, and most importantly a good friend of mine.

Vincent is one of the more passionate guys I know within my circle of enthusiast-friends and he is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Like myself, he’s also pretty much into coffee, high-end audio as well as all things related to lifestyle.

KC and Vincent would be joining us as content writers for the team and we’re now already working hard to prepare for some really exciting stuff in store for 2019. Man, I can’t wait (*ahem* for Edition 3).

Anyway, I couldn’t be happier to welcome these guys to the team. You’ll be hearing a lot from them really soon.

#OpenLetter – #TimeWellSpent – The Matick Blog X Front Room GTG – Edition 1

On behalf of Team Matick, I would like to start by apologizing for the lack of content and engagement on our Instagram page for the past couple of months. But rest assured, because by any means we were not basking ourselves in stagnancy during these few months, but instead we were tirelessly working on a new joint venture with our new partners at Front Room.

As of today, I feel very elated to announce that The Matick Blog has found a new home at the Front Room for a series of GTG events in the near future.

So what exactly does this mean for us and for you? For starters, this joint venture represents a step into a new direction for us at The Matick Blog. By doing so, we are now able to use this as a compelling platform to showcase the things and aspects we care and love about watches, the community and world that surrounds it in general. It allows us to unite watch enthusiasts from all walks of life within an intimate space here at the Front Room, to share and mutually cultivate that genuine love and passion for everything that revolves around the world of watch collecting and appreciation. Ultimately, this would also allow us to expand our horizons and build on a stronger sense of what we stand for in the relatively closed-off world of watches here in Malaysia.

After our first two GTGs last year, which we received overwhelmingly positive response from our attendees, we knew that we had to follow up with something special. At this juncture, I think we’ve done just that and we could not be any happier to be able to share this joyous occasion with you.

The Front Room is co-owned by Pete and Jo, it can be described as a cozy little space and café, tucked away in the warm neighbourhood of Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur. It is also a business purely founded on and fuelled by passion, which is in many ways, homogenous to what we hold dear to our hearts here at The Matick Blog when it comes to watches and the world that revolves around it.

F.Y.I, like many of us, Pete – the owner of the Front Room, is also a chronic watch geek.

So on the 27th May 2018, please do come on by for drinks, watch talk, and an all-around good time with us at The Matick Blog and fellow watch enthusiasts.

Also joining us as guest speaker is Praneeth Rajsingh, a co-founder of MING. He’ll spend some time sharing some of their watches and answering any questions you have about the brand. If you are a fan of the brand, this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss!

Festivities will run from 6.00pm to 8.30pm, and the venue will be located at the Front Room in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur. For all details and to RSVP, please drop us an email at info.teammatick@gmail.com or DM us at @thematick.blog on Instagram. Once your seat has been confirmed, an official invitation containing all the relevant details will then be sent to you.

The setting and dress code of the event will be casual with some specialty finger food specially prepared by Chef Daniel Yap, a young chef who earned his chops at the 2-Michelin Star Piccolo Lago in Italy and later founded the popular Pop Up Dining Kuala Lumpur, to specifically pair with Brooklyn craft beers sponsored by Carlsberg. Lastly and most importantly, feel free to bring some of your own watches…

Since seat availability is extremely limited, we kindly ask that you RSVP as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you!

For Team Matick,
Marshall
